Hotel Rooms: The Scarlet Huntington, San Francisco

Singaporean luxury in the heart of San Fran – The Scarlet Huntington is certainly far more than meets the eye.

The story:

The Scarlet Huntington Hotel is one of the landmark luxury hotels at the top of Nob Hill in San Francisco. The hotel is named after Collis P. Huntington, one of the Big Four railroad tycoons of the Old West (the other three are Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins and Leland Stanford).

When you step into The Scarlet Huntington hotel, the first thing that might surprise is the Peranakan touch, inspired by the new owners’ Singapore Straits Chinese heritage. But a lot has still been retained to pay homage to the former hotel’s illustrious legacy – the mansion’s iconic red façade for starters, as well as the devoted staff (many of whom have worked for more than 20 years in the hotel).

The rooms:

Rooms at The Scarlet Huntington are larger than what you would expect from a typical hotel as they were initially built as apartments. The rooms also feature a heritage-rich, Straits Chinese influence injected with modern contemporary style. Rooms are exceptionally roomy while suites feature a spacious living area and bright bathroom. True to its grandeur, the hotel has hosted many celebrities and influencers – famous photographer Annie Leibovitz checks into The Scarlet everytime she visits San Fran.

Around the hotel:

We highly recommend having dinner at the Big 4 restaurant, another legendary landmark in the area. This restaurant/bar hosts a jazz pianist every night to take you back to San Francisco’s lively yesteryear. The walls at the restaurant are adorned with old keepsakes, pictures, posters and maps that show the rich history of the place from its gold rush days.

The spa:

The hotel also boasts the Nob Hill Spa, an urban escape of pampering, rejuvenating treatments all set against a spectacular skyline of San Francisco. In this three-level oasis there are spacious treatment rooms, a Zen relaxation room, saunas, steam rooms, an indoor infinity pool, a whirlpool and a workout room. There is also a specialty shop that sells spa products, yoga outfits, swimwear and more.

The price:

Prices start from HK$3,715.50 per night for a superior room.
