Easter flights the busiest so far this year!

Interesting piece of holiday news for those of you who thought you were more clever leaving for a holiday during this holiday instead of Chinese New Year:

The airport handled 891 flight movements on Thursday, the first day of a long holiday weekend in the city of 6.9 million, breaking the previous record of 872 set in February.

Most of the extra flights were to destinations in mainland China and to South-east Asia as tens of thousands of people set off on holiday weekends, a Civil Aviation Department spokesman said.

The most popular destinations for travellers leaving Hong Kong were Bangkok followed by Kunming and Osaka. Hong Kong’s Easter break began early because of the Chinese Ching Ming festival Thursday, which is a public holiday.

The 891 flight movements was 14.2 per cent more than the daily average of 780 at the international airport which opened in 1998. The previous record was set at the start of the Lunar New Year holiday.
