White Cube Hong Kong Presents New Works By Georg Baselitz

By Butterboom Writers  /  October 13, 2015

White Cube is hosting artist’s first solo show in Hong Kong. The painter, sculptor, printmaker and draughtsman is one of Germany’s most celebrated living artists with a career spanning over 50 years. Among the highlights of the works that will be showcased during this exhibition is a large bronze sculpture titled Winterschläfer, a series of 12 new prints based on the sculpture, 10 new never-been-exhibited paintings inspired by Schiele and Auerbach from 2011 and 8 new black paintings which are an extension of the series shown at Glyndebourne this summer.

Born in 1938, Baselitz grew up in Saxony, an area that later became East Germany. He was inspired by Existentialist art and literature, and the works of German authors Nietzsche and Gottfried Benn. His first solo exhibition in Berlin – in 1963 – caused a public scandal and several paintings were consficated by the German authorities. Baselitz has since exhibited widely in major cities like Vienna, Paris, New York, Naples, Copenhagen and now Hong Kong.
