Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery is showing Chen Yiming: The World of Mortals · Dreamland exhibition from 15 to 29 April 2015. At this selling exhibition, you can view 55 pieces of work by Shanghainese artist Chen Yi Ming from two distinct series.
The World of Mortals series is from Chen Yiming’s early portraiture work for which he is most well-known. Chen Yiming is referred to as a ‘visual poet’ because of the elegant, serene way he paints his subjects in the romantic old world Shanghai. His painting gives viewers a look into the intimate moments of Shanghainese as they live their lives in the bygone era in full details from their clothing and decorative setting, capturing the mood and style of the era.
His Dreamland series on the other hand is completely different, in his Dreamland series, he paints abstract landscape scenes of China in mixed media on paper. Influenced by Renoir use of light and colours in his landscape scenes, Chen re-interprets nostalgic landscape scenes of China with a freer brushstroke and soft, sombre colour palette.
