Japanese pearl jewellery brand MIKIMOTO was founded by Kokichi Mikimoto, who created the world’s first cultured pearl in 1893 following the over-harvesting of natural pearls in his home town of Toba, Japan.
Since it opened its first specialty boutique in Tokyo’s Ginza district in 1899, the brand has grown and now has locations in major cities worldwide, from London, New York, and Paris, to Singapore and Hong Kong.
Honoured as the official jeweller to the Imperial Family, Mikimoto’s aim was to develop original designs that combined both Japanese craftsmanship and European aesthetics. This lead to the establishment of their own gold factory, which allowed them to design and manufacture one-of-a-kind pieces, facilitating absolute control over every step of the production to ensure the best quality.
MIKIMOTO’s product range has since expanded to include diamonds and precious stones set in necklaces, pendants, earrings, rings, brooches and bracelets. Special collaborations like the 2014 MIKIMOTO x HELLO KITTY collection make the brand definitely worth keeping an eye on.
