Avant-garde fashion house Maison Martin Margiela was founded by Belgian designer Martin Margiela in 1988. One of the most low profile designers around, he keeps a low profile throughout his career and always remains backstage after his shows.
Martin studied fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp). He launched his first collection with business partner Jenny Meirens in 1989 after an internship with Jean Paul Gaultier.
Since the launch of his collection, Margiela has been pushing fashion boundaris with his designs. He gained a reputation for his oversized designs such as long arms with linings, seams on the outside and mixing vintage pieces with newer garments. Margiela famously redesigns objects such as old wigs, canvases and silk scarves into couture garments. Each of his design is produced in limited numbers.
Currently John Galliano is the Creative Director and the brand is part of OTB, the holding group of Marni and Diesel.
