Founded by Issey Miyake, the Japanese designer is best known for his innovative designs as well as incorporating pleats with clothes. Miyake established his brand in the early 1970’s and his first collection A-POC (clothes were cut from a roll of fabric) was praised for their avant-garde designs. Miyake’s other notable collection is Pleats Please, where clothes are created from pleated fabrics. Both techniques (pleats and A-POC) are still incorporated into his collection and sold in stores today.
Since the 1970s, Miyake has found different ways to make clothes by experimenting with fabrics. Awarded the Fashion prize by the Design Museum’s Design (London) in 2012, he continues to spend his time researching fabrics whilst Yoshiyuki Miyamae heads the design team.
Since the launch of his brand, he has expanded to other lines including the bag line Bao Bao Issey Miyake and menswear line Issey Miyake Men. Miyake offers womenswear, menswear, shoes and bags.
In 2015, Issey Miyake launched their bag and accessories store Bao Bao Issey Miyake and their menswear store early this year, both stores are located in Harbour City.
