The House of Hermès started as a harness workshop in Paris back in 1837. Thierry Hermès ran the business with his sons and Hermes was so well known for their craftsmanship in creating quality harnesses and bridles that it garnered the patronage from European royalties including Napoléon III. In the 1920’s Hermes introduce their first accessories and clothing collection and started the path to become a luxury brand when his sons Charles-Émile, Adolphe and Émile-Maurice took over management of the company.
Hermès is credited for their timeless classic designs and is best known to have created iconic bags particularly the Kelly bag and Birkin bag. Named after Grace Kelly and actress Jane Birkin, these bags are the most coveted bags in the world. Each one requires artisans to hand stitch each piece, taking upto 18-24 hours to make. Both bags are so in demand today that they have a waiting list of 6 month to 1 year.
