On Our Radar: Out of Interest

By Butterboom Writers  /  September 8, 2016

We are excited about the debut collection of Out of Interest (O.O.I) by Malaysian-Portuguese headpiece designer, Angela Ooi. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Angela obtained her BA Fashion design degree in womenswear at Central St Martins in London. She worked as an assistant designer in Philip Treacy before gaining her MA in fashion design in Amsterdam. Ooi was also the first runner up in the International Talent Support ITS fashion competition in Italy and LVMH appointed her as the fashion designer for Antonio Marras, the prestigious Creative Director at Kenzo.

O.O.I is where Angela unleashes her quirky creativity. Her debut collection – known as Chapter One: “Preconception” – is a collection of edgy and chic metallic headpieces inspired by symbolic illustrations in 1950s and the photos of New York photographer Francesca Woodman who experimented with women’s body and spaces.

The headpieces are fun and fall under three main themes. There’s ‘The Story of Lip’ (two designs – Wear Your Lipstick On and Kiss Me Now), which use the lips as a symbol of femininity. The Story of Bouquet is where three floral styles (Francesca, Bloom and Divine) are transformed into wearable art; and The Story of Hat featuring two iconic styles (She Said and He Said) in the outline of – you guessed it – a lady’s hat and the gentleman’s hat.

The headpieces are made from plated metal and detailed with things like Swarovski crystals and charms. Rings, earrings and necklaces are included in The Story of Bouquet to complement the headpieces and complete your look. That’s a way to turn heads next time you’re at Happy Valley racecourse!

The price:
From HK$2,000 to HK$5,000
