A little bit imperfect, a little battered and little melancholic – that’s how we’d describe the jewellery collection by Alighieri, a London-based jewellery brand by Rosh Mahtani. Inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, the collection features pieces that correspond to one of the poet’s 100 poems that tells the story of a pilgrim’s whirlwind adventures through the realms of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise encountering mythical creatures, scraggy landscapes and terrifying demons.
Mahtani studied French and Italian at Oxford University and was inspired to create modern heirlooms from the literature she had studied. When she graduated in 2012, she interned by day at Harper’s Bazaar and Mr. & Mrs. Smith and worked on her collection at night. With no formal training, and a vehement obsession to create her jewellery that expresses melancholy and imperfection, Alighieri was officially launched in 2014.
Each piece is truly unique on its own. Just like Dante’s subjects, each piece of Alighieri jewellery is battered, imperfect, and a little bit melancholy. Each piece of jewellery tells a story of the wearer, embodying a modern heirloom, that travel with you on your own adventures. We are drawn to her bold, stand out pieces and think that they are the perfect modern heirlooms to collect or gift to a dear friend.
