Review: Smokin’ Aces DVD

Trying too hard to be Tarantino and Ritchie & failing miserably.

I’m pretty sure Smokin’ Aces didn’t make it to Hong Kong theatres. Even with its impressive cast (although mostly famous in the US) this shoot-em-up action crime flick is the perfect example of amazing trailer editing for a truly crap movie.

Check out the trailer here and tell me you don’t want to see it. Brilliant, brilliant style over substance on a production where it looks like the trailer editors got paid the most, and they were worth every cent.
I’d like to discuss the story but I was pretty confused by it; but the basic idea is some Vegas-type showman who has ties to the Mafia is going to tell all to the Feds and so to shut him up a bunch of different assassins are hired to kill him at the same time the Feds are trying to get in and protect him. Tons of bullets fly with interesting cast choices from Ben Affleck to Ryan Reynolds, Alicia Keys, Common, Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia, Jason Bateman and of course Ari Gold himself Jeremy Piven.

Don’t get suckered in – this movie is bad beyond belief (26% at RottenTomatoes). Just wait for Grindhouse for real Tarantino-brand mayhem.
