Opening Ceremony duo in, Antonio Marras out.
In a move that has shocked the fashion world, colourful ‘East Meets West’ label Kenzo has appointed new creative directors – Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, the duo behind Opening Ceremony for the job.
LVMH, the French luxury goods company who own Kenzo (the eponymous designer himself retired in 1999), has selected Humberto Leon & Carol Lim for the job, taking over from Antonio Marras, creative director at Kenzo since 2003.
The move is even more surprising given that Leon & Lim have no formal design training. However, WWD (via Fashionista.com) reports that whilst Marras was responsible for growing the label in Russia and China, sales had dwindled in the brand’s traditional markets. Leon & Lim are seen as fresh blood, retailers rather than designers and LVMH may be hoping that some of Opening Ceremony’s edgy status rubs off on Kenzo, in preparation for its re-entry to the American market – Leon & Lim’s most celebrated coup was recruiting fashionista favourite Chloe Sevigny to design her own kooky clothes range.
Leon & Lim are already hand-selecting a team of designers to help them on their way, whilst there’s speculation Marras may be bound for Dior.
