Chanel Métiers d’Art 2009

It’s over-the-top Russian inspiration for Chanel’s Pre-fall collection.

Karl Lagerfeld has taken a page out of Coco Chanel’s love life and transformed it into a collection to be reckoned with. For Pre-fall 2009, the designer’s theme was “Paris-Moscou”, and echoed days of Coco’s relationship with Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich.

The collection was rife of Byzantine and Russian inspiration- intricate embroidery, gilded tiaras, endless sequins and pearls, floaty feathers and layers upon layers of chiffon. These looks were toughened up with heavy furs, cozy fur hats, Cossack inspired boots and a smattering of badges. Colors were strong reds, blacks and whites, evoking the feel of unyielding Russian royalty.

Emerging Trends:

  • Strong colors like red, black and white
  • Gold embellishment and over-the-top details like feathers and fur
  • Soldier and military inspired details like boots, buckles, badges and boxy cuts

Looks we love:
