Alexander Wang‘s third runway season at Balenciaga is all about luxe sportswear. The Fall/Winter 2014 collection is made up of comfortable knits and quality jerseys that are minimalistic and flattering.
Cabled knits are laminated with latex or bonded with leather. Rugby-stripe dresses are knitted from thin strips of Japanese polyester jersey, and pullovers are re-imagined with thick fur ribs. Splashes of bright yellow, blue and red add an interesting twist to the generally austere image of the brand, although there was still a dominance of the minimalism that Wang is so famed for.
Slim, slightly flaring pants are superbly cut to be sexy and leg-elongating, a fact that is put into sharp relief by understated turtlenecks with asymmetrical hems. Meanwhile, “shopping bag” bags, which the models carried in multiples, pointed to Wang’s sense of humor. Although there were some misses, on the whole this collection points to a maturing designer. The appearance of super model Gisele Bundchen, who rarely walks the runways anymore, did much to reaffirm his cult designer status.
