The Viceroy Bali is 5-Star Luxury in the ‘Valley of the Kings’

By Butterboom Writers  /  December 9, 2011

Look away from the beach and towards this luxurious tropical hideaway.

Let’s get this out-of-the-way up front: simply put, The Viceroy Bali is an amazing 5-star boutique luxury hotel in Bali with an exclusive 25 villas situated on a secluded ridge of the Petanu River gorge – and you will not find a better getaway in Bali.

Most of us have been to the beach resorts down around Candudasa or Jimbaran beache, which are definitely fun for the suntanning set, but for a 100% calm and relaxing getaway all the way from Hong Kong, you’re going to want to look at The Viceroy.

Here’s a look at the property in detail:

The Facilities

Cozy and easy to get around, the front lobby welcomes you with adjacent boutique, gym, library and conference room.

This area overlooks the pool (a large and spacious area perfect if you want to chill out after lunch) and the one restaurant, called CasCades which will be your main point of eating during your stay, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

This high quality restaurant has an obviously very talented chef, but our one criticism would be that it seems to cater primarily to its international guests and, while we loved the Eggs Benedict and other egg choices for breakfast made to order and not buffet style (the lunch menu is pretty standard fare), and the dinner menu that enjoys many elegantly crafted dishes, it’s all a bit too westernized for our tastes, especially when you’re visiting a place like Bali. But the dinners nonetheless were fantastic.

As for the Lembah Spa, this is the signature landmark at The Viceroy with private rooms for couples and amazing views of the Petanu River valley. The body treatments were developed by Swiss therapists and mix western and Balinese techniques for a truly a heavenly treat in an already heavenly environment.

There’s a gym as well, which is good since there isn’t much walking area on the property with relatively short walks uphill to get around from your villa to the dining area, and the boutique onsite is your typical resort shop that will come in handy if you need something urgently.

There’s even a helicopter pad for easy access, should you wish to use it!

The rooms

The villas are where the magic happens at The Viceroy Bali. Check out this 360-degree look at one of the rooms.

There are 14 Deluxe Terrace Villas, 4 each of the Garden and Terrace Villas (all with 1,615 sq ft of space) and 2 Vice Regal Villas with over 2,500 sq ft of space, including a big outdoor patio and lawn area.

The most striking thing you’ll notice besides the massive living room with sectional sofa, oversized king bed, espresso machine, 47-inch TV, iPod docking station is that each of the 25 villas (with more being built as we speak) feature their own infinity pool (of varying sizes comparable to the size of the room) which are a nice touch.

As mentioned before, the pool area is another highlight with its private infinity pool and cabana where you can rest with a drink and read a book out of the direct sunlight.

The rooms are big, spacious and feature high ceilings. The bathrooms are massive with big showers and bathtubs and, yes, the pictures do match reality!

The Vicinity

If you’re looking to get away from other tourists and really immerse yourself in a getaway, The Viceroy Bali may be the furthest hotel from the airport you will find. Because of the insane Bali traffic, it was a 90-minute car ride from the airport to the property and that means you are deep in Ubud.

This is as close to privacy as you’ll get, bar heading into the middle of the forest!

The Viceroy is set for the couple who wants to escape from it all, or for Honeymooners looking for the ultimate pampering escape after a hectic wedding.

However, thanks to its proximity to the forest we did notice a fair share of new insects we’d never seen before, but thankfully nothing too bizarre to report!

If you want to go to Monkey Forest Road where some of the shops and restaurants are, as well as the temples and other sight-seeing landmarks, it’s best to travel by car which the front desk will easily arrange for you. And the shopping area is a half day excursion at most when you really should be unwinding inside one of the rooms or by the pool.

  • Great room design, private pool and exclusive and luxury feel
  • Perfect getaway for the private couple
  • The hotel staff are amazingly helpful and friendly and food was great.

  • It’s maybe a bit too private – a short drive to the nearest town with shopping and 90 minutes to the airport.
  • If you’re looking for the beach, this is not the place for you.
  • Restaurant could have a more local cuisine added to the menu.

The Viceroy Bali gets our thumbs up for an amazing hotel to getaway from Hong Kong and pamper yourself like crazy! It’s also part of the Small Luxury Hotels group, Mr and Mrs Smith and Great Hotels of the World, so you can already tell it’s amongst one of the better hotels you are going to experience.
