We all know Central as the heart of Hong Kong and the go-to shopping destination for designer goods. But did you know that if you wander ever-so-slightly off the beaten track you can find high-end fashion pieces for a fraction of the cost? Read on to discover more…
This tiny glass-fronted store is a short hike up from Hollywood Road on the corner of Peel Street and Elgin Street, and is a little gem for designer tops and dresses at a fairly significant discount. Everything on sale is a factory second, so there will be slight imperfections but thankfully they have managed to squeeze in a fitting room so you can see how the clothes look on. The best thing about this place is the variety of designers on offer, when we popped in they had pieces from Lanvin, Balenciaga, Moschino, Jil Sander and Alice + Olivia, amongst others. Prices are reasonable; tops start at around HK$700 and you can get dresses from HK$900, while sale items can be as little as HK$99. We advise paying regular visits as stock changes all the time and you never know what bargains there are to be had.

Brace yourselves ladies, this boutique requires a bit of a climb if you approach from Hollywood Road, but it is well worth the ascent. Located on Old Bailey Street just down from Caine Road, Montee is a calm, relaxing space selling seconds from well-known (and lesser known) designers. The staff are super friendly and the selection is good. Expect to find pieces from Stella McCartney, Dries Van Noten, BCBG Max Azria and Tory Burch. Similarly priced to Button Hole, dresses start around HK$900 and tops $700, and once again there is an excellent sale rail that they are constantly adding to, we found a gorgeous green Chloe dress there for only HK$299! The accessories are also worth mentioning, there are some unique, statement clutches on offer for HK$700 as well as a small collection of shoes.

So we may have veered slightly off-brief here as, strictly speaking, May Fashion is neither in Central nor is it an outlet store. It is, however, somewhere that you can buy pre-owned designer items for tiny prices and it’s just a stone’s throw from Central in neighbouring Sheung Wan, so we hope that you’ll forgive us. It’s fairly non-descript store facade does not give away what lies inside, which is a treasure trove of vintage clothing and accessories. We found shoes from Valentino, Chloe and Celine, all of which were around the HK$400 mark. Versace or D&G jeans will only set you back HK$180 and if you dig deep and rummage around, you’ll find a vintage Gucci bag in excellent condition for HK$880 or a Dior shoulder bag for HK$1,200. It’s well laid-out and easy to navigate, but there is a lot to get through so we recommend taking some time to browse.
