Known around the city for its eclectic night-life, Wanchai is a melting pot of big business, small boutiques and bars.  But take some time to wander down the increasingly trendy Queen’s Road East area, and you will discover a host of lifestyle stores that put Wanchai firmly on every decor, fashion and food lovers shopping list.  Located above the hustle and bustle of Johnston street and a stones throw away from Central, it is convenient and has a variety of stores stocking everything from unique quirky pieces to classical designs.

Kapok

Established in 2006, kapok began as a lifestyle shop offering a unique variety of products sourced internationally, with a focus on quality and creativity.  Kapok then expanded into two stores – kapok for fashion and accessories, and kapok on Sun street, Wan Chai (opened in January 2010) for lifestyle and culture, including a cafe and gallery space.  Carrying a well-edited selection of international and local brands such as Marais USA, Daydream Nation and Heeley, Kapok has become well-known as the destination for exclusive designs in Hong Kong.  Head here for stand out timepieces, minimalist chic clothing and unique home accessories.

Avant Garde

Avant Garde was stablished in 1973 and stocks a selection of stylish home accessories from Europe and Asia.  Their full product line includes rugs, cushions, lighting products, artificial flowers, bedding, glasswares and a sophisticated selection of home accessories.  As the sole distributor of Designers Guild  in Hong Kong, Avant Garde offers the full range of Designers Guild soft furnishing includes home fabrics, curtains, sofas and wallpaper.  They also provide a tailor made soft furnishing service.

Mr Blacksmith

Mr Blacksmith is a designware store with a focus firmly on ‘hardware’.  Even the business cards are pieces of sandpaper.  This is a DIY lovers heaven as you will find a wide range of uniquely designed products.  Expect lettered key hooks, paint brushes, steel clips, fun measuring tapes, alphabet wall hangings, Victoria & Albert hammers and quirky lamps.  Home furnishings are artfully placed throughout the wood clad store that definitely carries a more masculine appeal compared to most decor shops in Hong Kong!

Fink

Fink-The Art of Living is the destination for fine quality home accessories and decor.  Expect to find exclusive and original designs in quality materials for the home.  They stock a wide range of furniture, photo frames, soft furnishings and kitchenware and have an e-store for convenience.  Fink source their products from suppliers that adopt ethical, environmentally and socially responsible practices.

St Francis St

St Francis St (sfs) is one of Wan Chai’s hippest hang-out’s.  This Cafe’ and gallery is a taste of British culture in the Heart of Hong Kong.  They are committed to gathering new and emerging talents from Hong Kong and abroad, while providing an excellent selection of coffee beans, including Nude Espresso and Climpson and Sons and lifestyle products from, amongst others, Ally Capellino.  The elegant interior is designed by St Francis’ co-founder Mark Chan.  St Fran St is a space for collaborations; a space for musicians, designers and people from all walks of life.  Head here for unique bags, art work and excellent coffee.

Lala Curio
