A.O. Vertical Art Space is set to showcase an exciting solo exhibition entitled “Yakuza” featuring works by Belgian photographer Anton Kusters. After ten months of difficult negotiations, Anton and his brother Malik were granted permission to become the first westerners invited into the criminal underworld of Japan and have since spent two years documenting the lives of one of Japan’s notorious Yakuza gangs known for its brutality, rituals and strict codes of honour.

Kusters delves into the complex relationship between the Yakuza and the Japanese society and shares with us via his photos the struggle for a Yakuza member to balance a normal family existence with a career in the crime world.

Kusters takes viewers on a breathtaking journey into the underbelly of Japan’s shady transnational organized crime syndicate through his photos and journal.  Admission to the exhibition is free so there’s no reason not to swing by the A.O Vertical Art Space this winter to see this exhibition.
