Para Site launches its In Search of Miss Ruthless exhibition, bringing together works by 23 artists commissioned to interpret the idea of pageantry and the pageant queen. The exhibition, which takes a look at pageantry as a promise of mobility that both regulates and engenders ethnicity, will show at the Para Site gallery in King’s Road from 30 June to 10 September 2017.
Curated by Hera Chan and David Xu Borgonjon, the exhibition features works from artists throughout Asia like Amna Asghar, Doreen Chan, Viola Chen, Dachal Choi, Come Inside, Eternal Dragonz, Jes Fan, Christopher K. Ho, Eisa Joscon, Linda C.H. Lai, Fiona Lee, Ma Qiusha, Hurong Ngô, Ngoc Nau, Xiaoshi Vivian Vivian Qin, Renee So, Salote Tawale, Hiram To, Ka-Man Tse, Wong Kit Yi, Kristina Wong, Xiyadie and Yu Shuk Pui Bobby. Each of these artists have interpreted the visual identity of Miss Ruthless, a fantasy figure of popular support that can represent “our beautiful Hong Kong up on the world stage” as sung in Hong Kong Our Home.
Aside from art, the In Search of Miss Ruthless effort will also include archival documents, an experimental audio guide, two web projects, workshops, readings, video art screening and more. For details on what’s planned, visit the Para Site website here.
Para Site is Hong Kong’s leading contemporary art centre and one of the oldest and most active independent art institutions in Asia. It produces exhibitions, publications, discursive, and educational projects aimed at forging a critical understanding of local and international phenomena in art and society.
