Tibetan contemporary artist Gonkar Gyatso will showcase his solo exhibition – Pop Phraselogy – at Pearl Lam Galleries starting September 18, 2014. The artist is known for his political and humorous art that combines Eastern with Western culture. He often combines references to traditional Tibetan life with references to the global mass-media culture that shapes our cultural identity. Through his art, Gyatso questions what is considered traditional and how new cultural identities caused by globalization may affect that.
For his new exhibition, the artist once again turns his attention to popular culture. He uses the Buddha figure to represent cultural elements and his Tibetan identity. The Buddha serves as a beautiful form that is manipulated with his unique visual language of stickers and ephemera, magazine and newspaper clippings, and Chinese and Tibetan characters to capture the juxtapositions of everyday life. Pop Phraselogy is Gyatso’s culmination of 10 years of observation on themes like geo-political conflict, mass culture and tradition.
