White Cube will host an exhibition of new paintings by Paris based Lebanese-born writer and artist Etel Adnan, her first in Hong Kong from 4 June to 29 August 2015. Adnan was born in 1925 in Beirut and is known for her poetry, novels and plays as well as art. She started painting in the early 1960s when she was already a published writer and get her inspiration from literature, philosophy and the natural world. Her paintings are created on a flat canvas laid out on a table as she uses a palette knife to apply the pain in firm swipes. This is a technique that is typical to early Modernism, displaying both bold colours and energy. Her paintings have been compared to that of Russian artist Nicolas de Staël and Paul Klee.
Adnan is an award-winning novelist with her novel Sitt Marie-Rose winning the France-Pays Arabes Award. Her book is published in more than 10 languages and has also been conferred France’s highest cultural honour, the Ordre de Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
