Susanna Soo is the designer behind S.Nine and Susanna Soo Atelier. She launched the Atelier label earlier this year and with a string of celebrity fans is fast becoming one of Hong Kong’s names to know. This can be credited partly to her credentials. An alumni of the prestigious Parsons The New School for Design in New York where she studied fashion design, Soo then remained in the city after graduation by securing a coveted apprenticeship at Diane von Furstenberg. She later won an Arts of Fashion award in 2008 from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art which opened doors to Paris and the world of couture. Her own brand, S.Nine was founded in 2009 and combines sleek sophistication with wearability. We caught up with the designer to find out more…

Tell us a bit about yourself…

I am originally from Hong Kong – born and raised here basically. However I left for school in the States when I was 16 and spent most of my teenage and adulthood on the east coast – especially New York. I came back again in 2009 to start my fashion career as well as to reunite with my family, and that’s how I ended up back in my hometown.

I am a designer because…

I found that I have a passion for this line of work – from sourcing fabrics, thinking about construction details, solving fitting issues and putting together a collection that people love and wear with a smile.

A typical day for me is…

I don’t have a typical day – everyday is different from yesterday, that’s why it’s never boring.

My next big project this year…

Is to stay focused, maintain what I have achieved so far and polish up all areas that need to be polished.

Style is…

A language. Some people speak the same language and some have their own, unique language, while, there are people that create new languages.

Describe your style…

Feminine and sleek.

Favourite stores in Hong Kong and online…

I really don’t have much time to shop nowadays…the things I love (or help me survive) right now – I don’t know if this is at all related to this question – but they are foodpanda and uber to be honest. Fashion-wise my favourite local stores are The9thmuse and Sheer, I love the concept, philosophy and the selection that they have!

What are your investment pieces …

A nice workbag for me is a good investment piece. I love a good pair of pants as well. For shoes – people who know me know how much I LOVE shoes – especially killer heels. Since I wear them most of the time I will invest in many good pairs. For flats, I just adore Charlotte Olympia’s Kitty Slippers.

Special moments in my life…

My engagement surprise was a very special moment for me; it happened in SF at Napa Valley in a hot air balloon. I don’t think I have anything else that could beat this one so far!

Then I would say another special one was when I won the Arts of Fashion award at the SFMOMA back in 08. I had no idea I would be starting my own brand back then; how time has passed! I was wearing a feminine, sleek black dress/ensemble with classic pointy-toed stilettos.

Another one would probably be a recent launch for the Susanna Soo Atelier as well as the S.Nine by Susanna Soo at PMQ…sorry I can’t help but squeeze the two together because they are equally special to me and happened to establish around the same time earlier this year.

Most cherished piece of jewellery that was given to you…

Cartier watch my mom gave to me.

Jewellery I own…

I own lots of delicate gold jewellery and chunky rings with gemstones.  I don’t wear pearls much, but I do feel the instant classic effect as soon as I wear them.
