Designer Profile: Han Chong

By Lau  /  January 20, 2016

Malaysian-born Han Chong, founder of womenswear label Self Portrait is a designers to watch. The London based designer makes beautiful intricate clothes with lots of lace, embroidery and sheer materials at a very reasonable price point. Han Chong started his label in 2013 and in less than 2 years, Self Portrait have gained an army of style savvy fans like Reese Witherspoon and Kirsten Stewart and appeared in major publication like British Vogue.

Before making a name in the fashion world, Chong studied fine art in Penang and found success as an artist who have exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2009. Eventually, Chong moved to Kuala Lumpur to work for Fashion Designer Syeba Yip to gain some experience in the garment business. Deciding that fashion is what he wants to do, Han Chong enrolled into a womenswear design course at Central Saint Martins in London and upon graduation, co-founded Three Floor, an online store before launching  Self Portrait in 2013.

For SS16, Chong’s collection is fashion forward, feminine and full of energy with soft lacey pieces mixed with acid-bright colours like orange, citron and colbalt blue. Chong mixes up different textures and fabrics like lace, cotton, organza and silk to create a pretty yet edgy collection. We love the bell sleeve jumpsuit, cocoon sleeve shift dress, nude paisley culottes alongside their signature sheer paneling dresses in all length from mini to full length. Just like the Self Portrait girl who isn’t scared to stand out and make a fashion statement, Chongs SS16 pieces are attention grabbing pieces.
