Designer Profile: Biyan Wanaatmadja

An Indonesia designer to watch.

Biyan Wanaatmadja is one of Indonesia’s most prominent designer. His gowns and dresses are aften worn by Indonesian socialites and his extraordinary career in fashion has put Indonesia on the international map of high fashion.

Biyan is known for his exquisite pieces that draws on the rich heritage of Indonesian design with modern cuts and silhouette that is always elegant and sophisticated. Bijan has been dubbed the Dries Van Norten of Asia.  His collection boasts signature pieces made from a treasure trove of materials like semi-precious stones, Swarovski crystals, vintage pearls, flea-market glass beads and coloured stones.

Bijan studied fashion at the  prestigious fashion schools Muller & Sohn Privatmodeschule in Duesseldolf Germany and The London College of Fashion in England. Today his designs are sold at upscale boutiques in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Osaka and Taipei.  In Hong Kong recently to launch his capsule collection, available for the first time in Hong Kong at Lane Crawford ifc mall, here’s a little Q&A with the designer.

Butterboom: How would you describe the style of Biyan Wanaatmadja?

Feminine, soft – a definitive mix of materials and textures which all work together to bring out the strong female silhouette of the modern woman.

Butterboom: What do you think it is draws people to your designs?

Biyan Wanaatmadja: My signature trait revolves around the endless inspiration drawn from my own Asian and Indonesian heritage. I am fortunate to be able to dwell deep into my traditional roots and garner luscious inspirations from such as exotic region which present pieces with a modern interpretation, often using different fabric textures, lavish embellishments and intricate embroidery.

Butterboom: How did you get started?

Biyan Wanaatmadja: I was always told as a young child that I would one day define my life through a visual and creative medium. My family nurtured my inherent artistic abilities and I’ve never looked back as I instinctively knew that this was my destiny.

Butterboom: Where do you sell your designs?

Biyan Wanaatmadja: My designs are currently sold exclusively in Indonesia and now in Lane Crawford. I present an average of 150 styles per season priced between $500 for a jacket to $5000 for an elaborate gown.

Butterboom: What’s the one accessory a women can wear to look instantly stylish?

Biyan Wanaatmadja: An amazing necklace! It can dress up any wardrobe piece in a second. Throw it on over a simple top and jeans and you’re ready to go.

Biyan Wanaatmadja: Tina Chow.

Butterboom: What does fashion mean to you?

Biyan Wanaatmadja: Fashion is what drives me daily at work and is something I love doing because I get to create something beautiful each day.
