Christian Louboutin is a one of the most famous shoe designer in the world. His shoes are instantly recognisable by their red leather soles and are fondly called “Sammy red-bottoms”.
Louboutin fascination with shoes started in the late 1970’s but he did not work in the shoe industry until the 1980’s. During his travels he sketched drawings of high heels and presented them to the famous shoe designer Roger Vivier and became his apprentice. With great talent, he went onto as a freelance designer and worked for Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent. When he finally set up his first shop in 1991, Princess Caroline of Monaco became his first customer.
It wasn’t until 1993 that he came up with his signature red soles for his shoes. Whilst designing shoes, Louboutin was stuck for ideas so he grabbed his assistant’s red nail polish and slathered it on the sole of the prototype. From then on, red soles became Louboutin’s signature and all of his shoes have red soles.
Louboutin has topped the Luxury Brand Status Index for three years and won the Most Prestigious Women’s shoe awards from 2007 – 2009. He opened his first free-standing Asian store in Hong Kong in 2007.
Today, Louboutin has extended his shoe line to handbags, small leather accessories and cosmetics.
