Gladiator sandals have been a summer staple for as long as we can remember, but this season they have reached epic proportions. Knee-grazing gladiators were all over the Spring/Summer 2013 runways, from Alexander Wang to Versace, with heel heights ranging from flat to sky-high.

We have rounded up our favourite variations on the trend, including 3.1 Phillip Lim’s wearable take on the statement gladiator and an affordable high-street version for those of you that are not quite convinced.

For the traditionalists amongst you, try Stuart Weitzman‘s Gladiator sandals, which are probably the most true to those worn in ancient Rome. This pair of leather sandals keeps it safe with a flat heel and simple silver studded detailing, wear with a loose shirt-dress to rock an effortless summer look.

Zara are our favourite high-street store for transferring runway trends to something that works in reality and is available for a fraction of the cost. Try their take on this look if you are tempted but don’t want to part with several thousand hard earned dollars.

3.1 Phillip Lim‘s PJ sandals are yet another reason why we have fallen in love with this label, and in particular their accessories. These closed-toe sandals are made from intricately woven leather and are easily the most wearable version of this trend. Team them with practically anything and gain instant style points.

Although not strictly Gladiator sandals, the Marta knee-high boot with all-over cutouts from Alexander Wang is another, more contemporary variation on the trend. These scene-stealing calf-skin boots feature a chunky heel, wear them with an understated monochrome dress and let them speak for themselves.

And finally, for the fashion-fearless out there, try Guiseppe Zanotti‘s barely-there Gladiator wedges. These are the ultimate cut out sandals, made from calfskin and featuring gold coloured metal piping and a signature Guiseppe Zanotti sculpted heel. Not for the fainthearted, these are sure to turn a few heads for all the right reasons.
