Black and white features strongly in Valentino’s Fall 2011 collection.
Valentino’s new fall ready-to-wear collection by designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli represents a new emphasis on the propriety of classic feminine beauty today. Those critics who feared for Velentino with Chiuri and Picciols at the helm should be reassured by this new collection. They have managed something wholly new without eroding the classical founding aesthetics of the Valentino brand.
The line is an accessible result of Valentino’s texture-obsession. Clothes are detailed in the brand’s signature studs, though at times so subtly you might miss them from afar. Sheer prints abound. Lace or other sheer textured material is present in nearly every one of the garments, from simple lace ribbon collars to more ornate treatments including lace bonded with leather. Especially striking is the lace woven with cashmere, a three-dimensional material tailor-made for Valentino. The result of all of this sheer is a softness and layered motion that lends the garments a kind of haze – an atmospheric blur.
Perhaps our favorite feature of the collection is the silhouette: alluring but restrained, conservatively provocative, confident, delicate and powerfully feminine. The pieces are heavily constructed without being overwrought for a moment. The result is a collection that is undeniably glamorous, with the ever-present edge of high fashion, but consistently wearable. A sophisticated collection – at once adult and unabashedly pretty.
