An ethnic collection by Indonesian designer Mardiana Ika.
We’re thrilled whenever we come across a collection that stands out from the norm, like this distinctively ethnic Butterfly Momma collection presented at the Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter this year. This collection was created by Indonesian designer Mardiana Ika who’s a veteran on the fashion scene. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that she’s actually been based in Hong Kong for many years and has established Butoni Ltd, Hong Kong, since 1983!
Her clothes are inspired by the Miao people’s culture and folklore, in particular the myth of the Butterfly Mother who is believed to be the creator of the world. We’re awed by the embroidery work that’s so detailed and intricate and here you can see ethnic motifs on indigo dyed fabrics made using ancient techniques. It’s essentially a collection based on tradition that still looks contemporary and chic. Now, that’s really something.
The label is sold at KINJI Boutique, Maya and Kaleidoscope Fashion.
